The highly anticipated criminal biopic “The Godmother” will be directed by Norwegian Eva Sørhaug with a script by Frank Baldwin, and Catherine Zeta-Jones will star as the infamous ‘Cocaine Queen’ Griselda Blanco. The drug lord was a crucial figure at the center of the drug wars in Miami in the 70s and 80s, who became a millionaire by the time she was 40. Blanco’s story was also depicted in the 2006 documentary “Cocaine Cowboys” and its 2008 sequel, “Cocaine Cowboys 2”. The cast of the movie is slowly coming together with new additions like “Cantinflas” star Óscar Jaenada, and Academy Award nominated Catalina Sandino Moreno, amongst others.

This isn’t the first time Zeta Jones lands a role as woman involved in the drug underwolrld, as we saw her as the wife in 2000’s “Traffic”. Blanco however, will be a more difficult character to portray since she was the first woman in history to become the head of a Colombian drug network, also known as 'La Madrina' or 'Black Widow'. She was also responsible of numerous assasinations to stay in money and power, and despite being filthy rich, her physical appearance was always far from glamorous, especially after serving 18 years in prison.

Daniela Cretu will produce the film through her First Born Films banner, which is set to begin shooting early next year. Since Sierra/Affinity holds Blanco's life rights, CEO Nick Meyer will be one of the executive producers along with Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi. The movie will be released sometime in 2015.
