A three-month-old baby was tragically killed on Saturday, Sept. 11, after a man with multiple traffic violations crashed his car into another vehicle and hit a mother and her baby on the curb.

Tyrik Mott, a 28-year-old man who lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, has been arrested on charges of attempted grand larceny, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and attempted unauthorized use of a vehicle, as well as homicide in the untimely death of a newborn infant, according to the New York Daily News.

Mott was reportedly driving a 2017 Honda Civic on the wrong side of the road when he collided with a 2020 Honda Civic. The crash spilled into the adjacent sidewalk, where it severely injured a mother and fatally killed a baby who were both out on a stroll that night, the New York Post reported.

The baby reportedly flew over 15 to 20 feet in the air and died from a collapsed lung 90 minutes after being taken to a hospital. The mother was given emergency surgery and is currently in serious condition while the driver of the 2020 Honda Civic has also been hospitalized.

Mott attempted to escape authorities on foot and was caught trying to steal a 2020 Hyundai before he was arrested.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a law in 2020 that allowed the government to impound any vehicle with 15 speeding tickets of 5 red light tickets within the past twelve months.

Mott’s vehicle, which has Pennsylvania plates, has had over 160 traffic violations since 2017, including 13 instances of running the red light and 91 instances of speeding while in a school zone. It is not known why Mott was allowed to continue driving, according to AMNY.

“The killing of this child not only brings profound sadness — it brings parents and good people across this city an unshakable anger,” Mayor de Blasio said. “Anger that careless, reckless drivers continue to take innocent lives.”

Residents of the area have been left shocked by the incident and the death of the baby, whose parents were French and are currently vacationing in the country.

“Oh my God, it’s horrifying,” one resident has said about the incident. “This makes me sick. My wife and I, we’re expecting, and this is horrifying. It happened right here, right down the block.”
