Apple releases iOS 9.1. Apple

As expected Apple released its second iOS 9 beta to developers. The company unveiled the new software at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference June 8. IOS 9 includes a number of updates including Proactive Assistant with Siri, transit directions in Maps, enhanced multitasking features for iPad and more.

This new update comes just two weeks after the first beta was released to developers. According to the release notes, iOS 9 beta 2 includes bug fixes and improvements. The software update is currently availalbe only to registered developers of Apple's Developer Program. The company is set to release a public beta to everyone sometime in July.

The build number of iOS 9 beta 2 is 13A4280e. iOS 9 is compatible with the following iOS devices:

  • iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S
  • iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 4, iPad mini, iPad 3, iPad 2
  • iPad mini 3, Retina iPad mini (iPad mini 2), iPad mini
  • 5th generation iPod touch

The new beta is availalbe as an OTA (over the air) update for users who have the first beta installed. The software is also availalbe in Member Center on Apple's Developer site. If you don't have an Apple developers account there is another way to get the beta on your iOS device.

Note: Beta releases from Apple are primarily intended for developers to test their existing apps for compatibility with each new OS and to get a running start on integrating new OS features into their apps. As such, the beta releases of iOS 9 and watchOS 2 are not quite ready for consumer use and have the following unfortunate side-effects including app crashes, device instability and reduced battery life.

Most importantly, a device updated to a beta version of an OS cannot be restored to the previous OS version. There is no going back once you upgrade so make sure you give all of the above due consideration before continuing. So install at your own risk!

How to Register for an Apple Developer's Account, Download iOS 8 Beta 2 on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

1. To get an iOS developer account, you must visit the Apple website and purchase a developer account. The cost is $99 a year for an Apple developer's account.

2. You will also need to register your developer device in the iOS Development Center to authenticate the device.

3. Before downloading the iOS 9 Beta 2, back up your files on iTunes. This is a precaution just in case the device crashes and loses your data and you have to start from scratch, you can grab the backup from iTunes.

4. Once you satisfied all of the above requirements and procedures, you can then proceed to the actual downloading and installing of iOS 9 beta.

5. WARNING: Keep in mind that when preparing to test a beta version of the iOS 9 software, you will want to use an alternate device - not your main or personal device as bugs in the beta can cause crashes or even "bricking" of the device.

6. iOS 9 beta 2 currently supports iPhone 5 (CDMA and GSM and global GSM), iPhone 4S, and iPod Touch 5th Generation, iPad 2, 3 and 4, as well as iPad Mini and newer devices like the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, and iPad Air.
