For more than a decade, viewers have watched Diana Ahumada fight, love, lose and survive in the turbulent world of El Señor de los Cielos. Now, as the iconic Telemundo franchise prepares for its final season, Isabella Castillo says fans will meet a version of Diana unlike any they have seen before.
The actress returns to the role when the tenth and final season premieres July 7 on Telemundo, joining a cast led by Rafael Amaya as Aurelio Casillas and featuring returning stars Carmen Aub, Roberto Sosa, Maricela González, Robinson Díaz and Sandra Echeverría, among others.
After years of portraying one of the saga's most resilient and unpredictable characters, Castillo believes Diana has finally reached a different stage in her life.
"In Dinastía Casillas we saw a very intense Diana, always fighting, always trying to claim her place in the family," Castillo told this reporter during an interview. "This season we find a much quieter Diana, more independent, more reserved, colder, more calculating. She has her own business. She doesn't have to prove anything to anyone anymore."
That transformation surprised even Castillo herself.
The actress admitted that after years of playing a more impulsive version of the character, adjusting to Diana's new personality became a challenge. Yet she ultimately embraced the change, seeing it as a natural evolution for a woman who has endured extraordinary loss.
"Diana has gone through so much pain that now her focus is 100 percent on herself," she said. "She has lost her family. She has lived through so much that nothing surprises her anymore."
Even so, Castillo promises viewers will still recognize the woman they have followed through multiple chapters of the franchise.
"You're going to see the Diana you've always known, but with different colors and different nuances," she said, adding that fans will also see a more feminine and vulnerable side of the character.
As the series approaches its conclusion, Castillo reflected on how much the role has influenced her own life.
Among the lessons she has borrowed from Diana, she says, is the refusal to live in fear.
"The thing I admire most about Diana is not being afraid of life, of situations or of people," Castillo said. "She doesn't need everyone to like her. She lives her life the way she wants to live it."
The actress admitted she once spent too much energy trying to please everyone around her, but years in Diana's shoes changed that perspective.
"If someone doesn't like me, that's their problem, not mine," she said with a laugh. "I've learned to stand up for myself and say, 'This is okay with me and this isn't.' There's nothing wrong with that."
While television continues to occupy most of her professional life, Castillo revealed she still hopes to return to music someday. The former singer said acting's demanding schedule has made it difficult to dedicate herself fully to another creative project, but she has not abandoned the idea.
"If I return to music, I want it to be something unique and completely mine," she said.
For now, however, her attention remains on giving Diana Ahumada the farewell she deserves.
After years of betrayals, heartbreak, power struggles and survival, Castillo believes viewers are about to meet the most mature version of the character yet.
And while she teased that Diana will still create the occasional scene when necessary, she says the woman audiences meet in Season 10 has learned something important.
She already knows who she is.
