The parents of a seven-year-old girl who died of sepsis have been arrested, facing charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child. Their daughter, Omera Akinloba, died in 2018 but it appears her death had underlying facts that the parents need to answer for.

Arrested were Aremo and Anna Akinloba, each held on a $150,000 bail according to documents obtained by the Florida Times-Union. The warrant was arrested after investigators discovered that the couple had placed the child on a diet of only french fries and was not given proper medical care.

This led to Omera developing a rash all over her body which was never addressed medically. Also, the couple had stopped vaccinating the 7-year-old when she was only 2. Omera also suffered from malnutrition, WJXT reported.

It appears Omera also dealt with autism and the couple tried to self-diagnose the child. They never sought a doctor’s diagnosis nor had any health care visits. Aside from that, they addressed other health concerns on their own, including eczema which they treated with an over the counter lotion.

On Apr. 11, Omera was lethargic and had no real appetite. She vomited as the family was preparing for an outing to the zoo. When the girl went to bed, both parents watched over her. The only thing Omera did was drink water.

The Akinolba’s went to bed at around 9:00 p.m. but were awoken at around midnight when they heard Omera gagging and vomited.

Omera died of Sepsis on Apr. 12 2018 according to the Florida Department of Children and Family Services. The child became unresponsive at around 5:00 a.m. after being sick for several days before. Instead of calling 911, the couple decided to drive her to the hospital. They felt that they could get there faster. Omera was pronounced dead at 7:34 a.m.

The DCF conducted a health investigation behind the death of Omera and found no signs of abuse or neglect in the home. But a look at the medical files of the girl showed that there was medical and nutritional neglect. The abuse case was closed with "no indicators of death and not substantiated indicators of medical neglect."
