After an 18-month investigation, the Jan. 6 House Select Committee has formally recommended the prosecution of former President Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The committee voted to prosecute Trump on four charges. The charges include obstruction, conspiracy and inciting an insurrection. The panel also referred Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Jim Jordan, Rep. Scott Perry and Rep. Andy Biggs to the House Ethics Committee for failing to comply with subpoenas back in May.

Since the ethics committee is split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, and a majority vote is needed to take action against these politicians, it is unlikely that they will face any serious reprimands.

These recommendations from the committee to the Department of Justice were made on Monday during the committee’s final meeting. They also release a document with over 160 pages summarizing their findings. According to the report Trump was the main catalyst for the attack on the Capitol.

"That evidence has led to an overriding and straight-forward conclusion: the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, who many others followed,” read the report. “None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him,"

"What Donald Trump proceeded to do after the 2020 election is something no president had done before in our country," said Committee Chairman and Rep. Bennie Thompson. "In a staggering betrayal of his oath, Donald Trump attempted a plan that led to an attack on a pillar of our democracy."

The Department of Justice has not commented on the recommendation thus far, but Trump has. He took to his social media platform Truth Social to respond.

“These folks don’t get it that when they come after me, people who love freedom rally around me,” wrote Trump. “It strengthens me. What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger,”

He went on to insist that the committee and the charges have no merit.

“The Fake charges made by the highly partisan Unselect Committee of January 6th have already been submitted, prosecuted, and tried in the form of Impeachment Hoax # 2,” wrote Trump. “I WON convincingly. Double Jeopardy anyone!”
