Johnny Depp will no longer portray notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in a biopic from director Barry Levinson, the Hollywood Reporter says. The film did not sell well at Cannes and producers asked Depp to take half of his usual fee.

Johnny Depp pulled out of the Whitey Bulger film when producers asked the actor to accept $10 million instead of his usual $20 million quota.

Boston.com says that film makers are currently looking to cast another actor in Depp's place. Producers are worried about the affect Depp's departure from the Whitey Bulger movie will have on other actors like Joel Edgerton, who signed on to play crooked FBI agent John Connolly.

Johnny Depp's latest film from Disney, "The Lone Ranger," will hit theaters on July 3.

Barry Levinson is not the only director penning a script for a flick about Whitey Bulger. Ben Affleck is working with "Boardwalk Empire" writer Terry Winter on a Whitey Bulger film. Affleck's brother Casey and good buddy Matt Damon are set to star in the movie.
