Not everyone was okay with Kate Middleton’s entry into the world of royalty. As soon as they got married, Prince Charles already had a hard time hiding his disdain of the duchess, especially after then newlyweds’ first trip abroad together.

In 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton flew to Canada and Los Angeles for a 10-day tour, and the royal patriarch, Prince Charles, was less than impressed with how the couple behaved. For an innocent reader, their photos seem charming as they enchanted crowds from Canada to California, save for the Prince of Wales.

Royal author Sally Bedell Smith shared that Prince Charles found the photo ops “tasteless,” which included a shot of the two in cowboy hats as they graced the launch of the Calgary Stampede in Canada and a mishap where Kate’s Jenny Packham yellow frock was unfortunately blown up by a gust of wind. The latter even made headlines.

The prince allegedly found them too camera friendly, and he was a bit “irked” that they considered what was supposedly an official trip as their own personal vacation. Another author, Phil Dampier, shed light on another reason — a rivalry between father and son — that could have also been the source of his contempt toward Kate.

“When Charles and Camilla visited Canada two years ago they were greeted by relatively small crowds,” Dampier said. “They are in their 60s and are not what you would call glamorous,” he added.

Dampier explained that history repeated itself for Prince Charles. He felt “overshadowed” by Princess Diana before and feels the same toward Prince William and his highly publicized fairytale wedding. The author even surmised that the prince felt “sidelined.”

However, it wasn’t only him that harbored ill feelings toward Kate. The Duchess of Cornwall herself, Camilla Parker-Bowles, has been rumored to have caused the then-future duchess’ breakup with Prince William.

“She did not look at Kate as someone who was worthy of joining the Royal Family,” author Christopher Anderson divulged. This allegedly prompted her to convince Prince Charles to force Prince William to make a decision — to marry or leave her for good. And everyone knew how the story ended years later.
