Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are both fashion icons and are always in the news for what they wear during their public outings. Because of their unique but equally fabulous fashion choices, many wonder who between the two duchesses spends more on her clothes.

Both Kate and Meghan were well-heeled women before they married into the royal family. While the Duchess of Cambridge comes from a family of wealthy business owners, the Duchess of Sussex used to be a Hollywood actress with millions of dollars in her bank account. Their sophistication when it comes to their apparels goes long before they even met Prince William and Prince Harry.

When the two became duchesses, however, they became more stylish than ever. In fact, they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for their clothes alone.

While the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex both spend a lot on their clothes, one of them spends far more than the other. In 2018, Kate spent about $85,097 on her new clothing pieces, which is far more than an average woman her age usually spends on clothes in an entire year.

According to UFO No More, Kate’s spending in 2018 was big, but it was less than how much she had spent on her clothes in 2017, which was about $130,000. One of the reasons she spent less in 2018 than in 2017 was that she was on maternity leave.

But while Kate’s spending on her clothes in 2018 alone was astounding enough, it’s nothing compared to how much Meghan spent that same year. According to reports, the Duchess of Sussex spent $509,278 on her new clothes in 2018, which was about five times Kate’s spending.

Meghan’s spending didn’t only dwarf the cost of Kate’s closet, but it’s also even a lot more than what royals from other countries spent that year on their clothes. The Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, who had the second most expensive closet in 2018, only spent $144,349.

Quite understandably, Meghan Markle was a new member of the royal family in 2018, so she had to spend that much for her new clothes. As the new Duchess of Sussex, her clothes needed an upgrade to include items that are fit for someone of her position.
