A man allegedly took his own life by jumping in front of an oncoming train after strangling his 17-year-old girlfriend to death in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India on Wednesday, April 13.

The unnamed 21-year-old suspect and his 17-year-old girlfriend reportedly checked into a hotel room at around 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13. At the hotel, the man allegedly demanded US$195 (15,000 Indian rupees) from the minor, threatening that he would leak her intimate photos on social media if she didn’t pay up, the Indian Express reported.

Following this, a shouting match erupted between the couple. As their confrontation escalated, the accused, in a fit of rage, allegedly suffocated his girlfriend with a pillow. When the victim fell unconscious, he proceeded to strangle her to death.

After the murder, the suspect left the hotel on the pretext of getting some food and switched off his phone. When he did not return to his room some hours later, hotel staff started calling him on his phone but could not reach the suspect.

Suspicious of the circumstances, the hotel workers opened the man's hotel room and found the underage girl's body. Following the gruesome discovery, the hotel staff alerted the police about the incident. Officers rushed to the scene and transported the victim to a hospital. However, she was declared dead upon arrival at the facility.

The authorities identified the victim and the accused with the help of some documents found in the girl's bag. The officers later received information that the accused was on his way to Borivali. However, just two hours later, the suspect's remains were recovered from the track between the Kandivali and Borivali railway stations in an apparent suicide.

According to Government Railway Police officials, the man hurled himself in front of an oncoming train and perished on the spot.

“We have registered a case of murder and we will soon submit a summary report in court informing that the accused in the case is dead,” said the police.
