A man allegedly shot and killed himself after shooting his lover to death for refusing his proposal to marry her in Pali, Jodhpur, India on Friday, April 8.

The 30-year-old accused, identified as Chhagan Banjara, and Mamta Banjara, 23, have reportedly been in an extra-marital affair for the last five years after meeting each other while working in a catering and confectionery business. Chhagan is married and has two children. However, his estranged wife has not lived with him for the past several years. After meeting Mamta, Chhagan reportedly decided to leave his wife and propose to Mamta, the Times Of India reported.

However, Mamta and her mother were allegedly against the union as Chhagan already had children. Mamta had gotten married twice before but has been living with her parents after her previous marriages did not work out. When Mamta rebuffed Chhagan's proposal, he suspected that she was having an affair with another man. This led to frequent arguments between the couple.

On Friday night, April 8, at around 9 p.m., Chhagan stormed Mamta’s house in Subhash Nagar while carrying a pistol, interrupting her dinner with some family members. Even though the woman tried to run away, Chhagan caught her and shot her point-blank in the head. Following this, Chhagan also shot himself in the head and killed himself, Times Now reported.

Both were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment. However, Mamta was declared dead upon arrival by the facility's staff. Meanwhile, Chhagan was referred to a hospital in Jodhpur where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, April 9.

The authorities reportedly recovered a suicide note from the man’s pocket in which he blamed Mamta for his death. In the letter, he admitted that he left his wife after having an affair with Mamta.
