Manchester United star Mason Greenwood, who is facing accusations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior, appeared at Minshull Street Crown Court in England on Monday.
He was accompanied by his parents and sister, and he entered no plea, reported GOAL. At the court, the footballer spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. The hearing lasted less than 10 minutes. He was wearing a dark suit and a hoodie when he walked into court, and he looked grim-faced as he entered the building.
The 21-year-old was re-bailed until a hearing on Feb. 10, 2023, and his trial date was set for Nov. 27, 2023. The case is expected to last 10 days, according to Daily Mail. The three charges that Greenwood is facing relate to the same woman.
Prosecuting, Jason Pitter KC, told Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court that the case required “careful consideration” before it could proceed.
The footballer was granted bail by judge Maurice Greene with the same conditions as he was under before. He was granted bail at the same court last month. The conditions were not to contact witnesses, including the complainant. He was told to reside at an address in Bow Green Road in Bowdon.
After images and videos were posted online, he was first arrested in January over allegations relating to a young woman. Since then Greenwood had been on bail, but he was arrested in the Trafford area on Oct. 15 for an alleged breach of conditions. He was granted bail days later. The controlling and coercive behavior charge is related to a period between November 2018 and October 2022. During the time, Greenwood allegedly made threatening and derogatory comments towards the complainant. He is said to have accessed and monitored her social media accounts too. As for the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, it dates to December 2021.
Within hours of the allegations emerging online at the beginning of 2022, Greenwood was suspended from playing or training with Manchester United.
According to BBC, sports firm Nike first suspended then terminated its sponsorship deal with him. Video game company Electronic Arts also removed him from active squads on its FIFA 22 football simulation.
