It certainly hasn't been the type of season Manchester United hoped to experience under first-year head coach David Moyes. Entering the 2013-2014 campaign, the Red Devils had high hopes given the fact that most of last season's club – a team that claimed another Barclays Premier League championship – returned to Old Trafford. Currently sitting seventh in the twenty-team league however, Man U has not performed the way many expected the club would even under the direction of a new boss. Now set to take on a Chelsea team many believe will claim the 2013-2014 BPL title, loyalists at Old Trafford hope to see their team pull one out at Stamford Bridge without the services of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
Rooney continues to battle a groin injury with RVP shelved due to a nagging thigh injury and the injuries come at a time when United is in desperate need of points. Though claiming another league championship appears out of the question, the Red Devils are still in the mix to secure a top 4 spot in the BPL. Despite the teams struggles becoming a hot topic of discussion, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes David Moyes will be given time to implement his own style of play since Old Trafford higher-ups believe in loyalty and supporting the manager.
“I don't think there is a reason to have sympathy for David Moyes because he has a fantastic job," Mourinho, who could see the return of midfielder Frank Lampard ahead of Sunday's home match against United, said of Moyes. “He's very, very stable. The club gave him incredible trust when they chose him to be the next Manchester United manager after Sir Alex. It's a club with a fantastic culture. They believe in stability and the power of the manager.
“They believe in supporting the manager,” he continued. “Because they had a couple of bad results and they are not top of the league or as close to Manchester United as normal, these are not reasons for David to be in trouble. I think David is very stable and will have the time of his contract to build a team to achieve success and be there for many years. I don't think he's in trouble to have sympathy with, so no problems.”
Entering the weekend, Mourinho's Blues sat two points behind table-leading Arsenal while Man U landed five points behind Liverpool for the No. 4 slot in the league.
