If there is a thing that bothered Prince William and Kate Middleton the first time they knew of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s romance, it’s the former “Suits” actress’ age. While everything is better now between the two royal families, royal experts claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did not immediately warm up to her because she’s older than Harry.
In the new British documentary entitled, “William & Harry: Princes at War?” a lot has been revealed about how Prince William and Kate Middleton perceived the idea of Markle marrying into the royal family. According to Ingrid Seward, William and Kate did not like how fast the romance between Markle and Harry was. Aggravating the feelings were the thoughts that Markle is older than Harry and she was already married in the past.
“It was all so quick that William and Kate didn’t have a moment to get to know Meghan because Harry hardly knew Meghan,” Seward alleged in the said documentary, reported by The Sun. “And of course William and Kate would have quite naturally thought, ‘Oh, she’s been married before, she’s older than Harry, I hope she’s going to make him happy.’ Anyone would think that.”
While the age difference has long raised eyebrows, this is the first time that it has been raised as an issue from the parts of William and Kate. The Duchess of Sussex is only three years older than the Duke of Sussex.
The two only met on a blind date in July 2016 and by November 2017, they were already engaged! A few months later, on May 2018, they got married. A year after that, their firstborn Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born.
Seward is a royal expert, being the editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine that has been covering the controversial family for decades now, since the 80s. She has produced a total of more than 20 books on the subject as of now.
In the same documentary, Seward added that Prince William was worried about Harry and Meghan doing things outside of protocol and ruining the “business of the monarchy as a whole.”
The Duke of Cambridge cannot be said to be wrong about his worries. Markle and Harry did face backlash over the summer by snubbing certain protocols, such as holding the christening of Archie secretly. The godparents were also not revealed to the public, causing even more negative comments.
Markle has also been criticized in many more things afterward - for attending the Wimbledon tennis tournament and refusing fans to take photos with her, for being the guest editor of Vogue UK’s September issue, and many more others.
At the present, however, there are already reports claiming the two duchesses are now friends, with bets high that they will be sporting baby bumps at the same time next year.
