Meghan Markle is no stranger to the limelight, given her stint as an actress in the United States. Her relationship with Prince Harry skyrocketed her popularity, turning the American celebrity into a part of British royalty.

With her background and tradition-breaking behavior, many compare the American actress to the well-loved Lady Di. Many fans then wonder, will Duchess Meghan actually become as popular as the late Princess Diana?

The Princess of Wales got the attention of the media because of her young age, quiet demeanor, kindhearted personality and stunning beauty. What kept the attention of the masses, however, was the fact that she was an outsider to the royal family and Prince Charles’ wife to boot. This caused the media to flock to the Princess of Wales, catching her every breath and step.

Meghan, on the other hand, is an American celebrity well known for playing the role of Rachel Zane in the popular legal drama series “Suits.” Her time as a celebrity caused her to be able to handle the fame and popularity much better than Diana — who was reportedly “overwhelmed” by it — but this too was not enough. According to reports, she was also “struggling” because of all the attention, causing Prince Harry to issue a statement asking the paparazzi to back off.

A stark difference between the two, however, is their nationality. Despite Meghan’s popularity from her acting jobs, she’s not as well known and is not British. This, according to a royal fan on the popular question-and-answer website Quora, may be one of the reasons that the Duchess of Sussex will not be as popular as the Princess of Wales.

“She is currently something of a phenomenon here in the U.K.,” said Sallie Smythe, a user on Quora. “She wasn’t well-known here, and she’s not British, so we Brits were curious about her.”

Another user, Deanna Eppers, shared her comments, claiming that no one will probably ever be as popular as Diana was. “Diana was beautiful, magnetic, oozed charisma, championed great causes, got her hands dirty doing real work in her charities and she stayed young,” the user described. “And while [Meghan] will come close to being the People’s Princess, there really only was room for one, and Diana will still hold the title,” she added.
