A 74-year-old mother and her 45-year-old daughter were killed when their Nebraska home exploded last Dec. 8. This came not long after a domestic abuse protection order was granted to the mother against her grandson.

The casualties were identified as Theresa Toledo, 72, and Angela Toledo, 45 of 4810 S. 51st St. The blast severely damaged two other homes on the Omaha block according to Omaha Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Fitzpatrick.

Aside from Theresa and Angela, other household members were injured. This included Larry Rodriguez, Theresa’s partner and grandson Alexander Toledo, 27. Both were transported to the Nebraska Medical Center. The latter was flown to a burn unit in Kansas City for treatment, The Omaha World-Herald reported.

The cause of the blast has yet to be known. The timing of the tragedy comes not long after Theresa was granted a domestic abuse protection order against her grandson, Alexander.

The 27-year-old was living in the basement of the home. Theresa wanted Alexander out of her house for abusing drugs, including methamphetamine. Aside from that, he also had many electronics plugged into the walls and ceilings of the basement. She feared that this would spark a fire.

“I need Alex out of my house now before he destroys my house or harms me, the drugs make him crazy,” she wrote on the application for the order.

Also, Alexander had run into trouble in the past. Theresa pointed out how her grandson once drove her car to Walmart and stole an iPad. The 27-year-old was arrested for that incident.

Other than that, Alexander was arrested for drug possession about a month ago. He spent a week in jail and is due to appear in court in January. The blast also killed one dog and left another on oxygen support.
