The mother of a police officer who was lynched by a mob during a raid died of a heart attack after hearing her son’s untimely demise.

The deceased, 52-year-old Aswini Kumar, who was the Station House Officer (SHO) at the Kishanganj police station in Bihar, India, was beaten to death during the wee hours on Saturday, April 10, by an angry mob during a raid to nab the kingpin of a motorcycle lifting gang.

The SHO and his team, accompanied by the complainant of a stolen vehicle, were stopped by villagers when they tried entering the kingpin’s house in the Uttar Dinajpur district in West Bengal. The officer intervened when the mob began pelting stones at the complainant.

Kumar was mercilessly beaten to death while his fellow police officers managed to flee the scene.

The officer was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body was handed over to his family after a guard of honor.

The victim’s mother, who was a heart patient, could not bear the loss of her son. The woman died Sunday.

Both the victim and his mother were cremated Sunday, amid the presence of hundreds of relatives and villagers, who shouted slogans hailing them.

"Our police killed my father," Nancy, the SHO’s 15-year old daughter, said referring to the seven officers who allegedly abandoned Kumar during the raid. The identities of the officers are kept confidential at this time.

"This is a conspiracy and I demand a CBI probe. They left my father alone despite having guns. Not only circle inspector Manish Kumar, but all those who ran away should be punished. My grandmother also died of shock after my father’s death," Nanci said, ANI reported.

The West Bengal Police arrested the kingpin, Firoze Alam, and two other persons in connection with the incident. They have been identified as Abuzar Alam and Sahinur Khatoon, officials told the Press Trust of India.

This is not an isolated attack against the police in Bihar. SHO Dinesh Ram was shot dead in the city of Sitamarhi during a raid at a suspected liquor smuggler’s hideout on February 24.

"As soon as the team led by SI Dinesh Ram, along with watchman Lalbabu Paswan, reached the house of the fugitive, criminals opened fire. In the exchange of fire that followed, Mr. Ram and Mr. Paswan were injured. The SI died on the way to the hospital, while the watchman sustained injuries in the hand," district police official P.N. Sahu said, The Hindu reported

Consumption and trade of liquor in the city Sitamarhi in Bihar have been banned since April 2016. This city shares its borders with Nepal from where the mafia has been smuggling liquor into the city.

"Liquor smuggling in Bihar today has become the most lucrative and proliferating business for criminals and smugglers. Even policemen are involved in this. Several of them have been put under suspension," said a retired senior police official of the State, requesting anonymity.

The mafia has got stronger over time after it widened its network by involving criminals from the states of Punjab, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Nepal.
