A mother hanged her young children to death allegedly because she did not have the money to feed them.

The shocking double murder happened on Sunday morning, Oct.10, in Rajahmundry of East Godavari district, in India’s Andhra Pradesh.

The mother, identified as Pooleti Lakshmi Anusha murdered her daughter, 8-year-old Chinmayi, and her son 5-year-old Mohit Sreesathya, police said.

After the murder, the woman phoned her brother and told him that she has killed her children.

The family members responded to the home and rushed the children to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead.

The town‌ Circle Inspector Madhubabu arrived at the hospital and questioned the accused.

According to the police, the accused and the children’s father, Pooleti Ramu got married 11 years ago and has two children.

However, due to frequent issues between the couple, Ramu reportedly committed suicide a few years ago, police said.

Since then the accused has been living with her children in Mallyapeta.

Accounting witnesses, the mother had been torturing her children and had also beat them on Saturday night, the Hans India reported.

However, during the interrogation, Anusha denied the allegations and told the police that the family had been dealing with a financial crisis and that she killed her children for not being able to feed them.

But locals told police that the woman had no financial problems and could have had a different motive for the killings.

The police have arrested the mother and charged her with the murder of her two children. A further probe is underway.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a mother attempted to kill herself after poisoning her one-year-old daughter because she did not like to live in her husband's village.

The woman, identified as Leela Nayak, a resident of the Mandva village in India's Rajkot, consumed poison on Oct.4, before feeding it to her toddler daughter, Asmita, police said.

According to the police, Nayak had gone to live with her parents at Halvad Town during the Rakshabandhan festival. After living in the town for over a month she reportedly did not want to return to her husband’s home in the village.

However, despite her disapproval, her husband, identified as Rajnikant brought her back to his home a few weeks ago.

The woman repeatedly expressed her want to go back to her town which gave way to frequent fights between the couple.

On Monday night, following one such altercation with her husband, Nayak fed poison to their baby girl before drinking it herself.

The mother and daughter were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the infant died during treatment and Nayak is recuperating.
