A Louisiana mother has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after being accused of mercilessly throwing two of her children into a lake from a bridge, killing one infant and severely injuring the other, on Friday, Sept. 24.

Ureka Black, 32, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder after she flung two of her children into the waters of Cross Lake on Friday, Sept. 24. One of her children died in the incident while the other was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, but is expected to survive, New York Post reported.

Law enforcement officers believe that Black threw her two children into the lake from either the Cross Lake Bridge or the low bridge at South Lakeshore sometime before 11 a.m. on Friday.

On Friday, Sept, 24 at around 11:00 a.m, the locals reportedly spotted an unconscious child floating on the lake and alerted the Shreveport Police Department. Following this, Marine patrol officers were immediately dispatched to the lake and the infant who appeared to be unresponsive was pulled out from the water. However, the newborn who was rescued was unfortunately found to be dead.

Meanwhile, Black's other child, a 5-year old boy, was also found floating in the lake moments later. The child was rescued by marine patrol officers and transported to the Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical Center with “life-threatening injuries.” The child’s injuries have been downgraded to non-life-threatening by Saturday, Sept. 25, with the abused kid expected to make a full recovery, according to Law & Crime.

The surviving boy reportedly provided critical evidence in the case that helped officers identify Black as the person responsible for harming her own kids.

After retrieving two children from the lake, the officers were concerned that Black’s third child was also missing and may have been in the lake as well. However, the concerned officers investigated the third child's whereabouts and confirmed that the kid was safe in another location and had not been harmed.

After committing the horrific crime, Black reportedly fled the scene in a gray Dodge Caravan with a Texas license plate. The officials quickly put out a “Be On the Look Out” warning for her grey vehicle and Waskom Texas police officers apprehended her near the Texas border after spotting her at a rest stop.

Black is currently being held without bond in Texas and is waiting to be extradited back to Caddo Parish.

“My heart is just so broken with this event that has occurred today,” Wayne Smith, Substitute Chief for the Shreveport Police Department said.

Meanwhile, the police officers reportedly organized a drive-by birthday party for Black’s five-year-old son outside of LSU Health on Saturday, Sept. 25.
