Entertainment Weekly confirmed that the third season was indeed the series last, the decision of which originated with creator John Logan. The final episode, "The Blessed Dark," which signed off on Sunday night with a title card reading, "THE END," saw Vanessa (Eva Green) voluntarily dying at Ethan’s (Josh Hartnett) hand in order to save the world.

Logan told EW that he knew this was the end going into the third season and kind of explained Vanessa's end saying, "I realized that’s where the third season was going to head. It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God."

Green spoke on departing with the character, admitting that parting ways with Vanessa will be far from painless.

"I'm going to miss Vanessa," the 35-year-old actress confessed in a behind-the-scenes video, which was shot during production of Sunday’s stealth series finale. "It's going to be hard to kind of leave her behind. To be able to play such a beautiful character is a gift for an actor and I've been so lucky."

Green added that she is happy her character was able to go out on her own terms. Green said, "I always thought Vanessa deserves to go to the light. Deep down her faith is too strong, and that’s why the Joan of Arc in her has to win. It’s just such a strong ending."

Meanwhile, co-star Hartnett revealed it was "inevitable" that Ethan and Vanessa's conclusions were "intertwined."

"It’s not the way Ethan wanted it to end, of course. He wants to take care of Vanessa," said Hartnett. "He’s always wanted to take care of Vanessa. And it becomes clear that this is the only way he can actually do that."
