A pregnant woman was found dead in a grizzly killing in Brazil on Wednesday, with her body slaughtered and her womb cut out, with local authorities suggesting that the murder was a part of a ritual sacrifice.

Ohana Karolin, a 24-year-old woman from Sao Paulo in Brazil, was seven months pregnant with her fourth child when she was found dead by a passerby with her womb sliced open in what investigators are calling an alleged “macabre ritual,” according to the Daily Beast.

Beyond the carved-out womb, Karolin’s genitals were also reportedly found mutilated, and her shorts and flip-flops were pushed to the wayside as she was “dumped” in a prominent area in Mogi Guaco at Sao Paulo, the New York Post reported.

Local authorities investigating the matter believe that there may have been a ritualistic nature to the killing, largely due to the placement of her body, which is surrounded by multiple evangelical churches of various denominations.

Her murder continues to puzzle authorities in the area, both due to its gruesomeness and because of how unclear the motivations of her death are. The grizzly nature of the killing has made officers consider that she may have been “sacrificed” by a group of people.

Karolin’s ex-husband was called to identify Karolin’s body, and local authorities are investigating a possible angle where Karolin’s current boyfriend, whose identity remains hidden by authorities, may have had links to a local gang that may have caused her death.

“She met a kind of tough gang,” a friend of Karolin’s said. “I even moved away from her a little bit because of that. But I don't know what happened. She was really nice, she didn't have a bad time. Everyone liked her.”

Karolin's remains have been retrieved for an autopsy to ascertain her cause of death, including the tool or tools that may have been used to mutilate her and open up her womb.
