A wax museum in London has split up the wax figures of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, sparking criticisms among royal followers. The Duchess of Sussex has failed to secure her slot alongside the royal family inside the museum, but fans were surprised to see her wax figure among those of celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and David and Victoria Beckham.

Visitors at the museum questioned why Meghan Markle was absent from the collection of royal wax figures when she has been a royal for more than a year now. She married into the royal family in May 2018 and now has a baby with Prince Harry.

According to reports, the curators have decided to move her figure away from Prince Harry to reflect her A-list status more than her royal roots. This decision immediately sparked controversy, with some branding the move as a mere publicity stunt.

In a statement, royal correspondent Kathy Lipari insisted that the figure of the Duchess of Sussex should be placed among her regal relatives and not her celebrity friends. “Anybody studying PR or marketing needs to take note, this is a great publicity stunt,” she said.

Lipari also noted that Meghan did not even have an A-list status as an actress before she married Prince Harry. “She wasn’t even a wax figure until she met Prince Harry and certainly was engaged to Harry,” she said.

“I think it is just a political stunt, they have got the headlines around the world. But, did anyone know Meghan Markle, really on a global scale, from ‘Suits?’ I think we all know it was dating a royal and now being in the royal family,” she added.

Other critics also noted that “times must be tough” for Madame Tussauds, and the royal split was meant to get more people through their door. However, Madame Tussauds General Manager Steve Davies denied the claims, saying that there’s a reason they had chosen to highlight Meghan’s celebrity status and not her royal status.

“At Madame Tussauds London we’re always listening to what people have to say about their favorite stars,” he said. “Meghan continues to carve out her own modern take on life as a royal and we want to mirror her independent celebrity status in the transaction,” he added, saying that they just wanted Meghan to mingle with her familiar celebrity circle before going back to her royal circle.
