The Duke Edinburgh, 98, has a long history of health scares, which includes heart problems, arthritis, abdominal surgery and bladder infections. And after his accident on January 17, 2019, when his Land Rover Freelander flipped over after colliding with another vehicle, his health has become something of a public concern. So, when he was rushed to the hospital recently, it led to many speculations about his deteriorating health.

Prince Philip has been ill for a month following a nasty fall he suffered during playing polo. He was recently flown to London via a helicopter from the Norfolk estate for “observation and treatment” for a pre-existing condition.

As he will be kept under observation at the private King Edward VII hospital for “a few days”, he will be another member of the Royal family to not attend the traditional Christmas celebrations. As Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are currently enjoying their vacation in the U.S. along with their 7-month-old son Archie, they will not be joining the annual Christmas festivities in the palace.

“The Duke had a bad fall and was confined to bed for a couple of days. He didn’t break anything, but it gave everyone a scare. He suffers from gout which makes him more irritable and he lost his appetite. Those around him were worried as he’d stopped eating and didn’t want to go out. But he’s a 98-year-old man and this is all very common at this age,” a royal source said.

“He’s been in good health generally but missed the Queen’s Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday for the first time. And for the first time in what feels like centuries he won’t be seen shooting anywhere this year, not even on the Sandringham estate which is a great shame,” the source added.

Soon the Queen, 93, left for the traditional Royal Christmas dinner in Sandringham. The Buckingham Palace has also released an official statement following Prince Philips transfer to the hospital and have said that he was admitted as a part of a routine check-up, not because of a sudden lapse in his condition.

“The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition. The admission is a precautionary measure on the advice of His Royal Highness’s doctor,” read the statement.
