The whole world grieved when Princess Diana died in a Paris car crash on Aug. 31, 1997. From her last phone conversation with Prince William and Prince Harry to her simple last meal, here are some of the last things the Princess of Wales did before her untimely death.

The Last Thing Diana Saw

With the paparazzi following their every move, Dodi Fayed thought it would be a clever idea to use the decoy car and outsmart them. Thus, he and Diana got on board a black Mercedes driven by Henri Paul, who reportedly went over the speed limit on route to his apartment from the Ritz.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck, and the car crashed into a concrete pillar outside the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. This means that what Diana last saw was most likely Paris’ iconic landmark.

“The last thing she saw was the Eiffel Tower lit up,” Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell said. “As you enter the tunnel, the last thing you see is the Eiffel Tower on the left bank.”

Her Last Words

Diana was still alive when paramedics rushed to the site of the car crash. In fact, the late princess was even able to speak a few words to the team.

“My God, what’s happened?” were Diana’s last words, according to French firefighter Xavier Gourmelon, a member of the rescue team that first arrived at the site. Gourmelon said that he even gave the princess CPR when she had a cardiac arrest and that she seemed stable when she was transported to the hospital in an ambulance.

Her Last Meal

Before Diana and Fayed got inside that ill-fated Mercedes, they had dinner at the L’Espadon restaurant at the Ritz Paris. But contrary to what fans might expect, her last meal is surprisingly simple.

According to the Daily Meal, the late princess had “a meal of Dover sole, vegetable tempura and a mushroom and asparagus omelet.” Chef’s Resources describes Dover sole’s flavor as “mild and sweet, elusive and enticingly different from more mundane white fish species.”

Her Last Conversation With William And Harry

William and Harry never imagined that it would be the last time they would be able to talk to their mom. Diana had a phone conversation with her sons in the morning of the day when the car crash happened. Unfortunately, however, it was just a brief chat since the two boys were in a hurry to play with their cousins.

“Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know ‘see you later,’” revealed William as the last thing she said to his mom. “If I'd known now obviously what was going to happen I wouldn't have been so blase about it and everything else.”

Harry is similarly regretful that he didn’t chat with his mother a little longer. “Not knowing that was the last time I was going to speak to my mum. How differently that conversation would have panned out if I'd had even the slightest inkling her life was going to be taken that night,” Harry said.
