A recently discovered patent by Sony has resulted in speculations that the PlayStation Move controller could be getting a makeover in the near future, and this makeover will add a touchpad. The patent which came from CVG was filed back in June 2012 but only recently published, and is for a "flat joystick controller." The accompanying image with the patent looks a lot like the current generation Move controller only with the addition of a touchpad on the handle of the controller. Seeing how the new PS4 controller offers the same touchpad feature many have speculated that the new Move controller is designed with the PS4 in mind.

The patent goes into detail about what to expect from the new Move controller's touchpad. "In a traditional joystick, it's hard to keep a user's thumb still while the user provides input by engaging various motions with the joystick. This is due to the fact that in the joystick, the thumb's support moves. However, using a touch input surface, the thumb can be kept still while continuing to provide the user's input by pressing on the input surface. The pressing of the user's finger on the input surface causes friction that is recognized."

This new patent could mean a new move controller is on its way and it could also mean nothing. The fact that the patent is over a year old and there has been no official means puts a cloud of doubt that this controller will foresee the future. However it could be beneficial for Sony to create this Move controller to remove input issues with the PS4 down the line. When the PS4 was announced there was a bit of PlayStation Move coverage but since then not much news has not been announced. Time will tell if a relaunched Move controller is in the works and perhaps it will be released alongside Sony's other accessories like the VR headset?
