PlayStation 4.5 rumors, news and speculations. Sony/PlayStation 4

The much-rumored PS4.5 console is getting more traction with its news and speculations. The latest rumors suggest the console will be codenamed "NEO," while the apparent specs for the console are also revealed.

According to GiantBomb, the upgraded PS4 will be referred to as "NEO," and will contain a higher clock speed, improved GPU and higher memory bandwidth. The console is also rumored to support 4K image output.

The report also claims that titles shipped from October 2016 must contain a "Base Mode" for the current PS4 console and a "NEO" mode for the upgraded console. Games released prior to October can opt to take advantage of the new hardware with a patch update.

The "NEO" mode will offer gamers a higher visual fidelity and more stable frame rate. Check out GiantBomb's exact specs below:

  • Original PS4 CPU - 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz
  • NEO CPU - 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz
  • Original PS4 GPU - AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz
  • NEO GPU - Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz
  • Original PS4 Memory - 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s
  • NEO Memory - 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s

From the documents obtained by the website, it appears as though Sony has no intentions of splitting its user base between the "NEO" and original console. Both consoles will share the same user interface, store and much more. There is also no indication that Sony will make "NEO" only video games nor will "NEO" users be offered exclusive content.

This October launch date makes sense as The Wall Street Journal, who has an inside source, reveals the console will be "announced before the planned October release of the PlayStation VR."

The WSJ's source also echoes GiantBomb saying that despite the new high-powered hardware of the PS4.5 or "NEO," it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog."
