Netflix is determined to go all out in pursuit of the top spot. The streaming giant is clear in its intent—amass viewers of all kinds—and “Love is Blind” might seem like the key to it.

Just in case you’re wondering, Netflix recently dropped “Love is Blind”, a reality show which sees couples get engaged even before they meet. Unsurprisingly, the streaming giant’s viewership soared with the show’s release despite mixed responses (Just for the record, Daniel D'Addario, the chief TV critic for Variety, opined that the show “is not 'good,' but it is something.”

Coming to think of it, what D’Addario said makes a great deal of sense—to Netflix's current strategy at least. Netflix cemented its positing in the streaming industry with shows like “Stranger Things,” films like “Roma” and documentaries like “Making a Murderer.” But TV is one arena that remains unexplored by Netflix. If smart strategies are employed, Netflix could massively benefit from the show leading to widespread expansion of its viewership base aside from offering more variety in terms of the content.

Thinking along similar lines; Brandon Riegg, Netflix's vice president of nonfiction series and comedy specials, recently implied how the mix makes sense from a business perspective. “Simply put, we know unscripted programming is hugely popular on linear TV, and has been that way for a long time,” said Riegg to a media outlet, adding, “I think in our efforts to provide that sort of proper breadth and depth of options to the members, it makes sense to have unscripted programming be a part of that.”

The stance helps connect the dots, in regard to Netflix’s recent approach to the TV viewing experience. The streaming giant has made conscious efforts by shifting from competing with HBO for premium dramas to becoming “the broadcast network of subscription video-on-demand services, as stated by Zak Shaikh, vice president of programming and entertainment at a research-based media firm, Magid.

“Love Is Blind” also marks Netflix’s foray into reality programming. It is also believed that a show like “Love is Blind” might help the streaming giant to retain its U.S Subscriber service which faces stiff threats from its immediate competitors.
