Since Meghan Markle married Prince Harry, she has become the most criticized member of the royal family. As a former Hollywood actress, she’s no stranger to criticisms and negative reports, but there’s one royal family tradition that’s holding back the Duchess of Sussex from effectively dealing with bad press.

In fact, dealing with criticisms would have been a lot easier for Meghan if she remained an actress, according to royal expert Victoria Arbiter. “It’s very difficult when you come from a celebrity background where a publicist can stand up for you or come out and say ‘no, that report is categorically untrue,’” Arbiter told Nine News Australia.

The problem with being a member of the royal family is that they follow a tradition of not answering negative reports directly. “But, generally speaking, members of the public follow the Queen Mother’s well-worn mantra: ‘Never complain, never explain,’” Arbiter added.

As a result, everyone is free to comment and criticize whatever they want without any response from the royal being targeted. “And so you have to sit back while the world’s media and social media just comment,” the royal expert said.

Despite this unfair setup, Meghan seems to be handling things well on the surface. But it’s also highly likely that the tradition is making things incredibly difficult for her.

“And the fact that she’s still showing up, still smiling, still interacting with members of the public shows that she really does have nerves of steel,” Arbiter continued. “I think it must be very difficult behind the scenes.”

Meanwhile, Meghan’s fans back in the U.S. are starting to take notice. While they love the British royal family, they are starting to feel that the family failed to protect the Duchess of Sussex.

“There is a sense, however, they feel that the Royal Family hasn’t done enough to protect Meghan,” Arbiter talked on Yahoo’s Royal Box podcast. “And that is a theme that is developing.”

As expected, the cause of the misperception is the royal family’s tradition of not saying anything. Arbiter explained that it’s hard for Americans to understand why the family would opt to remain silent when they could have simply issued official statements to settle things.
