Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego took aim at President Donald Trump over his decision to launch strikes against the Iranian regime, recalling that he received draft deferments during the Vietnam War.

"Draft dodger is willing to sacrifice working class kids. How charitable of him," Gallego said in a social media publication.

Gallego has been active online since the attacks began, arguing against them and calling on Congress to vote on a War Powers resolution to prevent Trump from continuing military operations without congressional authorization.

"The Senate can not and should not do any votes until we vote on a War Powers resolution. This war in Iran is wrong, illegal, and not in our interest. Americans should not be put in danger for the interest of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Israel," he said in another post.

Elsewhere, Gallego expressed sympathy for the people of Iran, saying they "deserve freedom and dignity," but claimed the U.S. "cannot send our men and women to die at the whim of the President."

"The regime's actions shouldn't become an excuse for a wider war that punishes civilians and puts our troops at risk," he added.

The U.S. and Israel are currently carrying out what Washington has described as "major combat operations" in Iran, seeking to destroy its military capabilities and potentially topple the theocratic regime.

Axios detailed that strikes by Israel's Air Force have targeted Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other top figures. Initial assessments believe several targets have been successfully eliminated.

In a video posted early Saturday, Trump accused Iran of conducting "mass terror" since the 1979 revolution, adding that "we're not going to put up with it any longer."

"We're going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. We're going to annihilate their navy, we're going to ensure that the region's terrorist proxies can no longer destabilize the region or the world and attack our forces," Trump said in a passage of his speech. "We will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon," he added.

Elsewhere in the speech, Trump encouraged the people of Iran to topple the regime once the bombing ends. "When we are finished, take over your government, it will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations."

Iran has retaliated by launching missiles to Israel, as well as U.S. bases in the region including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the attacks a violation of the UN Charter and a "clear crime against international peace and security." He said Iran will use all its "defensive and military capabilities."
