A man from Cardiff in the United Kingdom was slapped with a life sentence on Monday after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a mother and her teenage daughter just days after he was released from prison.

Joshua Carney, a 28-year-old man who had just served around four years of an eight-year sentence for a series of robberies in Cardiff, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison on Monday for raping and sexually assaulting a mother and her teenage daughter, and will only be considered for parole after serving ten years of his sentence, according to the Guardian.

Carney, who claims that he does not remember the incident, was reportedly high on spice, a synthetic marijuana, when he went to the home of the two, with the mother preparing herself for work at the time, Sky News reported.

The man reportedly forced his way in and threatened to stab the mother if she did not comply. The teenage daughter was able to call the police before Carney was able to force himself into her room at the behest of her mother, who feared that Carney would kill them both.

“She at that point didn't know if the defendant was armed or not and became very concerned she and her daughter were going to end up seriously injured, if not killed, by the defendant,” prosecutor Ieuan Bennett said.

Carney then forced the two of them in the mother’s room before raping the both of them in front of each other, and then sexually assaulting the teenage girl in front of the mother. After the rapes, he attempted to escape the home after seeing police cars in the front, but was arrested by police officers when he attempted to leave the home through the backyard, the New York Post reported.

“This was a particularly degrading offence because it involved the mother being forced to watch her own daughter being raped and her daughter being forced to watch the rape of her mother,” Bennett said.

Carney reportedly denied doing the crimes and claimed to have no memory of the incident when he was first taken to a hospital, but has since pleaded guilty to the charges of rape, attempted rape, and assault by penetration.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, who handed down the sentence, called the acts “deliberately sadistic and no doubt done to satisfy your perverted sexual desires and your abusive sexual remarks are indicative of your attitude - one of the rapes was punishment for phoning the police."

“You have a significant capacity for manipulative and predatory [behavior]," she continued.

The victims, who have been left traumatized by the incident, was praised by the prosecution for their clear thinking and courage that they possessed and which helped them gather enough evidence to convict Carney.

“Despite the violent and truly degrading acts Carney committed, the victims showed tremendous courage and clear thinking allowing really strong evidence to be gathered, which enabled the CPS to present a robust case leading to guilty pleas,” prosecutor Kelly Huggins said.
