A 59-year-old man suffocated to death next to his bed in the Portuguese town of Campinas after his partner fell on him and he was unable to get up on his own. The woman suffers from obesity.
According to the newspaper Correio da Manhã , the incident, which occurred in the town near the western city of Porto, has shocked the entire neighborhood. In fact, Campinhas residents learned of the incident when they rushed to the couple's aid after hearing the woman's screams.
Local police explained that the man died of "accidental asphyxiation." According to his wife, when she woke up she saw her husband on the floor, between the bed and the wall. He tripped and couldn't get up.
Neighbors reported that it took five men to get her out and try to help her husband. However, it was too late. The firefighters and ambulance were unable to revive him.
"It's obviously an unusual death, but there's nothing criminal about it," a police officer told the Portuguese press.
"The woman was trying to get closer to her partner, who was on the ground when she tripped and fell on him," he added, adding that the "widow" is undergoing psychological treatment to help her deal with the incident.
