Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson finalized their divorce in 1996, but it wasn’t until 2008 that Fergie had the courage to talk about their failed marriage publicly. That moment happened 12 years after their divorce, when Fergie faced BBC reporter Michael Parkinson in a televised interview.

Prince Andrew and Fergie have been on the headlines recently. With them apparently closer than they have ever been, royal fans are convinced that Prince Andrew and Fergie are still very much in love and are going to remarry soon.

Dubbed as “the happiest divorced couple in the world,” Prince Andrew and Fergie have proven that divorced couples can still happily co-exist. Despite their legal separation more than two decades ago, the two have managed to be close friends. In fact, they are probably the only divorced couple in the world who still lives under the same roof with their children.

In a 2008 interview, Fergie revealed that the reason for their divorce had nothing to do with how they feel about each other. That only means that when they parted ways, she and Prince Andrew were still in love and looked at each other as husband and wife.

According to Fergie, she and Prince Andrew got divorced because she ran up a lot of debts and she needed to get out to work. “You can’t be a member of the royal family and work in this country,” she said.

“I think also that Andrew and I had our differences. We, as you know, are really steadfast in our parenting to our two girls, Beatrice and Eugenie — who are 13 and 15 years old,” she added, saying that their unity in parenting shows with their children’s sense of confidence and security.

Before their divorce was finalized in 1996, Fergie was embroiled in one of the biggest scandals in royal history. In 1992, months after she confirmed that she was leaving Prince Andrew, photos of her with Texan millionaire John Bryan surfaced, showing Bryan sucking her toes.

All along, the public thought the scandal was the reason for her divorce from Prince Andrew. Based on Fergie’s interview years later, however, the Duchess of York clarified that it was her financial woes, not the scandal, that had led to their divorce.
