An Ayr man is in custody awaiting sentencing after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow last week convicted him of raping two of his exes, who were subjected to horrific sexual and physical abuse more than seven years ago in Scotland.

The convicted rapist Oliver Barrie, 22, of Ayr, had terrorized and raped the schoolgirls, who were 13 and 15 at the time, the court heard. He was 14 then and was in an on-and-off messy relationship with the women.

Barrie was also convicted of assaulting the 13-year-old at an Ayr property and a car park on several occasions between April 2013 and July 2015. He would repeatedly assault her and punch her in the gut with fears she might be expecting a baby with him.

The victims, who cannot be named for legal protection, asserted that the abuse destroyed their lives, leaving them to suffer long-term trauma. Barrie had taken away their childhood from them, they noted.

One of the assault victims, now 21, had told the court that the man became very abusive early on in their relationship, noting it ultimately led her to grapple with her own mental health, the Mirror reported.

“He’s got a way with words and can talk his way into getting what he wants. He knows exactly what to say to make you feel guilty," she noted. “I ended up going to therapy and that helped me realize he was dangerous.”

The 21-year-old victim opened up about Barrie's horrific abuse after police appeared at her door following a report from the man's second victim, a 15-year-old girl at the time.

The second victim, now 22, was assaulted by the man between June and December 2014. The abuse went on until she reached 16 when she was raped by Barrie in June 2015.

The woman had also been subjected to physical abuse after the offender feared he might have gotten her pregnant. On one occasion, Barrie punched her full force in the stomach, sending her in tears on the floor, the Daily Record noted.

“He was very manipulative and cheated on me with 26 different people I know of. He secluded me from everyone and controlled every aspect of my life," she said. “It was a constant cycle and there was no relief. I felt trapped and didn’t know what to do.”

The victim further noted that she was forced to stay on FaceTime all the time until she fell asleep, so Barrie could monitor if she is talking with anyone else.

She remained silent and endured the abuse for years. The woman only reported the incident to police in 2018, with the support of Rape Crisis, a group supporting, educating, informing, and advocating for survivors, particularly in the Glasgow and Clyde area.

The abuse survivors said that they came forward to tell their stories so they can help other victims of abuse find the courage to approach authorities for help.

Rape Crisis remains ready to offer services to abuse victims especially amid the COVID-19 crisis. Anyone suffering from sexual violence, abuse or exploitation, harassment, or stalking is urged to contact the organization for support through Connect Live at 08088 00 00 14.
