At 9pm on Monday, October 14, the new Fox series "Sleepy Hollow" returns for Episode 5 of its first season, entitled "John Doe". In tonight's episode, heroes Ichabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills will find themselves tested by a brand new foe when a young boy shows up in Sleepy Hollow speaking a strange language and suffering from a strange sickness. A synopsis of the episode issued by Fox reads: "When an unidentified boy is discovered in Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills are called to the scene. After speaking with the child, they immediately realize that something sinister and sickly is afoot and the duo go on a hunt to discover his home and origins - and are shocked by what they find in the all-new "John Doe" episode of SLEEPY HOLLOW airing Monday, Oct. 14". It turns out -- spoiler alert here -- that this strange language being spoken by the child is actually Middle English, a form of the language spoken in the Middle Ages.
Which brings up the question of how the boy is finding himself in 2013, in the sleepy New England town. He's also got a strange disease that modern medicine can't account for. The boy is put into quarantine, where parts of his body begin to turn black -- the veins in his hands first, and slowly the rest of his body. Worse yet, Ichabod starts to see some of the same symptoms on his own body, and is taken into quarantine, too. Lt. Mills finds herself alone in her quest to solve the mystery of the boy and other strange happenings in Sleepy Hollow.
So far, Fox's new series has been doing quite well in the ratings, which have earned it an offer from the network for a second season, with 13 episodes slated to be aired next year. DVR in particular has boosted their ratings, according to Entertainment Weekly. The second episode, aired on September 26, saw its ratings jump 71 percent when DVRs were factored in: next-day ratings were 3.1 among adults 18-49, but rose to 5.3 rating after seven-day numbers came in.
A clip from tonight's episode shows the boy-from-out-of-time as he lies in quarantine and features a word with the creators of the show. Tune in to Fox at 9pm tonight to watch "John Doe", and if you find yourself unable to watch it on TV, click here for the online live stream!
