Stephen Colbert had a blunt message for Donald Trump Monday night after the president gloated over "The Late Show's" cancellation: "Go f**k yourself."
Colbert announced on Thursday that "The Late Show" would come to an end, following backlash over his public criticism of CBS' $16 million settlement with Trump. Days before the news broke, Colbert had taken aim at the network during a segment, suggesting the payout was a "big fat bribe" connected to a broader scandal involving Trump and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump responded to the show's cancellation in a July 18 Truth Social post, mocking Colbert's ratings and suggesting fellow late-night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel were next.
"I absolutely love that Colbert' got fired," Trump wrote. "His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show."
On his next broadcast, Colbert clapped back during his opening monologue, sarcastically pretending to take offense before delivering a sharp punchline.
"How dare you, sir. Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go f**k yourself!" he said to cheers from the audience. He went on to call himself a "martyr" of the late-night landscape and joked that there was only room for one cancellation victim, referring to Jimmy Kimmel and his show.
"The view is fantastic from up here," he quipped.
Colbert also made sure to pivot the conversation back to Trump's own scandals, alluding to the president's ties to Epstein: "The only other story out there is kind of a small one ... The president was buddies with a pedophile."
Additionally, the late-night host questioned CBS's decision to cancel "The Late Show," which he said the network blamed on finances.
