The five-month long murder investigation of a two-and-half-year-old child who was found partially buried behind a shop has taken a new turn, police said.

The police have arrested five persons, including a minor in connection with the murder of the toddler, Muzamil Ahmed, whose lifeless body was discovered on Dec. 6, 2021, in Bengaluru, India.

The arrested were identified as Nawaz (20), Saddam (35), Haneez Sohail (22), Zaheer (23) and a minor, all residents of Kalaburgi.

When the body was exumed, police spotted injury marks on the child’s body and beleived the boy was murdered for ritual purposes.

The police began investigating after the boy’s father, Nisar Ahmed registered a formal complaint seeking answers for his son’s murder, according to reports.

However, a recent investigation revealed that the accused had killed the child over a dispute with his father. They then buried the child’s body behind a shop, police said.

"Since Nisar runs a retail shop, we initially started identifying the people who came to his shop on a daily basis. Later, we found out that Nawaz used to come but later had stopped coming. Nisar told us that he had had a fight with Nawaz as he had not paid the money for the groceries he had bought," Inspector Arun Muragundi said.

"We questioned each one of them separately and eventually they confessed to the crime. We found out that all the accused had fled from Kalaburgi after the incident but had returned after a couple of months as they had come to know that there was no evidence. Now, we are focusing on building up the case based on circumstantial evidence."

"While the motive was to teach Nisar a lesson, the accused did not perform any black magic. However, they did torture him for some hours before killing and burying him," the police officer added.
