President Donald Trump has not fired Attorney General Pam Bondi or FBI Director Kash Patel over the backlash to the handling of the files on Jeffrey Epstein because he does not "want to create a bigger spectacle," according to a new report.
The Department of Justice and the FBI are reportedly "breaking at the seams" following the intense backlash that has ramped up in the weeks since the agencies' memo declaring that Epstein killed himself and that he had no client list, one source told the Washington Post.
Since the memo's release, various public figures have begun demanding answers over how the decisions in the memo were concluded. Some, including prominent MAGA influencers, have called for the resignation of Bondi or other top officials.
However, Trump has resisted doing so, seeing as he "does not want to create a bigger spectacle by firing anyone," another source told the outlet.
Even as the Trump administration has promoted other announcements, such as Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard's office accusing former President Barack Obama of fabricating the Russian interference reports, the Epstein files have continued to dominate headlines.
The backlash has prompted Democrats to boost calls for accountability and transparency, demanding that officials testify about the memo and continued pushes to release the files. Before the House shut down early for August recess, Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie joined forces to create a discharge petition to release the files.
Trump previously called for his followers and the media to move on from the Epstein files, but since a report by the Wall Street Journal alleged that Trump sent Epstein a birthday message with a drawing of a naked woman, the president ordered the DOJ to release any approved grand jury testimony.
The president was later alleged to be named in the files in another report by the WSJ, though simply being named in the files is not a crime itself. Trump has since denied both of these reports.
In the midst of the backlash, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino traveled to Florida to question Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sex trafficking charges in connection to Epstein, about her case and Epstein's. Maxwell has also been subpoenaed by a House committee for testimony in a deposition.
