A Republican Senator admitted that he aims to conceal files pertaining to disgraced New York financier Jeffrey Epstein in order to cover up for President Donald Trump.

Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin made the admittance while delivering a speech on the Senate floor on Thursday.

Senate Republicans on the Judiciary Committee subverted Democratic Sen. Cory Booker's attempt to force the Justice Department to release evidence from the Epstein files, blocking an amendment attached to legislation by Booker. In response, Mullin proposed a resolution on Thursday that would make the publication of the Epstein files the responsibility of the US judiciary.

"I'm sure this would be handled just like any other thing they tried to go after like the baseless impeachments, or the baseless special counsels. Or the unbelievable amount of charges they tried to file against the president. I'm sure this will be handled the exact same way," Mullin said. "What we're simply wanting to do here is give [Trump] cover. So if my colleague from Arizona actually wants transparency, then he would drop his objection to my resolution."

Social media users, journalists and prominent political figures alike have mocked Mullin and the leadership of his party for saying the quiet part out loud.

"Yes, it's pretty clear that['s] what y'all are doing," said Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas).

"Give him cover for what? 👀" said Rep Mary Gay Scanlon(D-Pennsylvania).

"Oops, a GOP Senator let the plan slip: Give Trump 'cover' for being in the Epstein files," commented liberal research network Patriot Takes.

"Holy sh*t he just said it out loud," added liberal publication Meidas Touch.
