Two infants died reportedly after receiving routine immunisation vaccination from a health centre in India.

16 infants got vaccinated on Wednesday, May 26, at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Soibugh in Budgam district.

A 45-day-old baby who received the normal immunisation vaccination from the health centre died on the same day.

"The baby of Rafiqa, who was 45 days old, also received the same normal immunisation vaccination which we had given to other 7 babies in the health centre. After one hour of the vaccination, the parents came back to the health centre. We then examined the baby in the health centre," Dr Mehmooda, Block Medical Officer, told Kashmir Reader on Wednesday.

The doctor said the infant was referred to GB Pant Hospital in Srinagar after the baby’s medical reports came out critical. The infant was later pronounced dead at the Srinagar hospital.

Another 49-day-old infant, who had also received the vaccination from the same health centre, died the next day.

"We have stopped routine immunisation vaccination across the district for a period of one week and the vaccines of this batch have been stopped," Chief Medical Officer Budgam, Dr Tajamul Hussain Khan, told Kashmir Reader.

"We had given these vaccines to 16 babies at the Primary Health Centre Soibugh. Out of them, two babies have died. We are looking into why these babies have died," Khan confirmed.

The medical officer added that the routine immunisation vaccination was also given to other infants across the district.

"But all the infants are in healthy condition across the district. We are also checking the reason whether these infants have died due to the immunisation vaccination or these deaths have occurred due to some other problems," he said.

"The District Adverse Events Following Immunisation committee has also conducted a meeting in this regard. We are also following the guidelines and protocols of the District AEFI Committee," he added.

The medical officer said the committee will submit the final report within 60 days.

This is an ongoing investigation and no further details were available at this time.
