Real Madrid's dream of winning an unprecedented 10th UEFA Champions League title came to an end this week when the club lost on a 4-3 aggregated in the semi-finals to Borussia Dortmund.
Knowing the squad will not be playing further into the tournament, Madrid club president Florentino Perez may begin to wonder if his coach Jose Mourinho will remain on the sideline.
As Yahoo Sports reports, the 50-year-old head man may in fact be leaning toward departing from the Madrid sideline. When asked if he thought he would return next season, the coach gave a startling answer.
"Maybe not," he said. "I don't know but I want to be where people love me to be."
Noting that he feels appreciated more in some places and not so much in others, Mourinho - who began his tenure with Real Madrid in 2010 - knows he'll have options no matter what he decides to do.
"I am loved by some clubs," Mourinho said during a news conference aired on ITV Sport. "In Spain it is different; some people hate me, many of you in this press room."
Considered by many to be one of the best coaches of all-time, Mourinho launched his coaching career in 2000 when he took the reigns of the Portuguese club S.L. Benfica. Departing Benfica after one season, Mourinho's next two stops were with Uniao de Leiria and Porto.
His coaching career would really take off in 2004 when he was named the head coach of the English club Chelsea. Head coach of the London squad for three seasons, Mourinho guided the club to two Premier League titles and three domestic cup championships.
Departing Chelsea after a falling out with owner Roman Abramovich before the 2008 season, the Setubal, Portugal native would go on to lead Internazionale to the 2009-2010 Champions League title.
Since taking over as head coach of Real Madrid in 2010, Jose Mourinho has compiled an overall record of 125 wins, 26 draws and 21 losses. In his 14-year head coaching career, the Portuguese coach has compiled well over 420 wins and a career winning percentage of 68%.
If Mourinho does in fact depart Real Madrid heading into the 2013-2014 campaign, Yahoo Sports reports that current Paris St Germain manager Carlo Ancelotti could be the top choice of Florentino Perez to replace Jose Mourinho on the Real Madrid sideline.
Regardless of what Mourinho decides to do, it is clear he is still one of the top managers in the game as he once again guided Real Madrid deep into the Champions League season and the club will have a chance to win their second King's Cup this season if they take down Atletico Madrid in the final.
