Albert Pujols, Angels’ first baseman became the first player in major league history to hit his 499th and 500th home run in the same game. He drove in five runs. The Angels beat the Nationals 7-2. The slugger hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run homer in the fifth inning, becoming the 26th player to join the 500 club and reach this milestone. He is also the third youngest player to get to 500 homers.

Pujols commented and said, “It tastes better with a win. I knew this year, it was gonna happen, whether it was tonight, tomorrow, two months from now. So my goal was just to prepare myself every day to try to help this organization win.”

Pujols is having an MVP-type season. He has eight homers and 19 RBIs. One of his teammates, Mike Trout said, “The homers he’s hit this year, they’ve been long ones. He’s squaring balls up. That’s the Albert I’m used to seeing. Full, healthy, 100 percent healthy.” Pujols went on to say “To have more than 19,000 players who wore a big league uniform and to have only 26 players to do this, it’s pretty special.”

He is also the fourth Dominican player to reach 500 homers. He joins Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa and Manny Ramirez. Alex Rodriguez has 654, Sammy Sosa has 609 and Manny Ramirez has 555. Surprisingly, there is only one Dominican player in the baseball Hall of Fame and that is the great Juan Marichal. With the ties to PEDs that Rodriguez, Ramirez and Sosa have, Pujols could be the second Dominican to be inducted.
