Tired of having members of one Michigan city's council abstain from voting on numerous pieces of legislation on numerous occasions, one member said he had had enough.

Ypsilanti, Mich. City Council Member Pete Murdock proposed a bill requiring 'yea' or 'nay' votes on every future bill up for a vote before the committee. The only circumstance in which a vote to abstain from support for or against the bill would be in the case of a financial or professional conflict. "We should vote on every issue," Murdock said.

However, Murdock should have expected the eventual outcome of the council's vote. Fellow council members Susan Moeller and Brian Robb, along with the city's mayor Paul Schreiber all voted to abstain on the bill banning abstentions.

Moeller explained that her vote to abstain on the abstention ban was related to a rider to the bill that involved the addition of a discount supermarket on a stretch of Water Street in the Michigan town. The bill ended up failing when the votes were finally tallied.
