Prince William’s classmates at the University of St. Andrews were given a fair warning after the royal enrolled in the institution. They were also threatened with expulsion if they break one important rule.

In the YouTube documentary “Prince William At Thirty,” former student Helen McArdle said that they were reminded not to talk to the press about the second in line to the throne. Doing so could result in either expulsion from the hall or expulsion from the university itself.

University of St. Andrews’ former Lord Rector, Andrew Neil, said that he was surprised that the rule actually worked. Prince William’s schoolmates never shared information about the royal, and they never spoke to the press the whole time he was studying there.

“The decision from the beginning was to treat him as much as an ordinary student as you could the heir to the throne once removed,” he said. When we did this agreement, I never thought it would stick, because I know the British media and they can’t help themselves. But to my astonishment, it stuck,” he added.

Meanwhile, royal expert Roya Nikkah also said that there were only two aspects of Prince William’s university life that the press was allowed access to. First, the media was allowed to cover his arrival at the University of St. Andrews. Four years later, they were also allowed to cover the royal’s graduation.

From the time Prince William entered school to the time that he graduated, the press was asked to stay away from him. McArdle also said that Prince William was treated very normally by his schoolmates even though deep inside they were actually starstruck.

While at the University of St. Andrews, Prince William met his wife, Kate Middleton. The couple started dating in 2001, and they were boyfriend and girlfriend for 10 years before they finally tied the knot.

McArdle’s room was just next to Kate’s bedroom, and she said that the Duchess of Cambridge also had some hilarious antics up her sleeve. There was a time when Kate had to be carried back to her room because she was paralytically drunk.
