Prince William previously became frustrated with his life as a royal while studying at the University of St. Andrews. While there, the future king couldn’t escape from receiving special treatment simply because he’s a member of the royal family.

In the book “William And Catherine,” royal author Andrew Morton recounted a time when Prince William auditioned for a role in one of the school’s plays during his first term. However, the dad of three wasn’t cast for the part.

“Although successful in the audition he was not given the role, the producer telling him that he was worried that the media, rather than townsfolk and fellow students, would dominate the audience in the small Byre Theater during the four-night run,” he said. “The rejection symbolized for William the frustrations of fitting into university life. However hard he tried, he could not just be an ordinary student,” he added.

According to Morton, Prince William’s frustrations contributed to his indecision on whether or not he should continue studying at the university. The Duke of Cambridge’s university friend, Michael Choong, also said that Kate’s husband also became sick of all the people who he didn’t know were following him around.

Eventually, Prince William decided to stay at the University of St. Andrews with the help of his family and his then good friend, Kate. But this didn’t mean that the second in line to the throne stopped feeling lonely.

“Many considered it seriously uncool even to mention the prince in conversation with fellow students,” Morton said. Neil Holmes Walker, a former student at the university, shared his thoughts to the royal author during an interview.

“Any comment about him [Prince William] implies that his presence affected your decision to study here, making you a fan and a social climber,” Walker said. “Nothing could be worse than to be thought of as keen to meet William.”

After a few years, he graduated with a degree in Geography. Even after his graduation, Prince William continued dating Kate. After splitting from each other twice, the royal couple decided to tie the knot at Westminster Abbey in 2011.
