An investigation is underway after a woman stumbled across an unconscious and unresponsive 28-year-old man in a Chinatown elevator shaft in Manhattan on Saturday afternoon.

According to the New York Police Department, resident Margaret Nicoll, 61, was on her way to her favorite restaurant for lunch when she tried to use the elevator and made the grim discovery in the building.

“Holy sh-t. I eat here every day. I have my mashed potatoes and two biscuits and I have my meat here,” the woman told The New York Post. “A body trapped in an elevator? Unbelievable!”

Police arrived at 109 Lafayette Street following a 911 call at 1:45 p.m. on July 3 regarding a person in need of help near Canal Street. Responding officers said they found the body of a 28-year-old man wedged between the elevator car and the first and second-floor walls of the building.

To retrieve the corpse, authorities had to use a circular saw to cut through a shared wall in the adjacent Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken business.

EMS (emergency medical services) were also called to the location. They later declared the victim dead at the scene. There were reportedly significant damages to the housing on the roof where the engine of the lift was. An elevator repairman arrived at the scene to assess the impairments from his suspected fall.

The identity of the victim remains undisclosed pending family notification. The gruesome death is still under investigation. At this stage, no arrests have been made by law enforcement, Amny reported.

Meanwhile, in India, a corpse was found by elevator technicians from the top of a lift at Junagadh Civil Hospital on Friday. The service elevator was reportedly stuck on the second floor and out of order, so technicians were called to repair it.

Junagadh Police suspected that the deceased, identified as 44-year-old Dilip Parmar, was discovered about 12 hours after the man had a fall. He most likely died on the spot, according to Ahmedabad Mirror.

Parma lived alone for years and was in the hospital to get treatment following a recent nasty fall. Staff says he had visited the medical facility earlier to get his head wound stitched.
