The story of Venezuelan influencer Pedro Luís João Figueira Álvarez, better known as La Divaza, and his mother, Keyna Álvarez, is a poignant example of the challenges faced by LGBT+ youth in Latin America—and of the enduring power of love, forgiveness, and family bonds in the face of adversity.
Their journey was also marked by the harsh realities of a broken healthcare system and a fierce, desperate battle against cancer. Though the disease ultimately claimed Keyna's life, love triumphed. So did inspiration.
Together, La Divaza and his mother shared a powerful message with their audience—one that shattered prejudices and showed the beauty of healing deep emotional wounds between a mother and her son. Now, that love has transformed into grief.
With heartbreak in his voice, Pedro announced today, Friday, May 2, that his mother passed away in Venezuela. But the lessons they shared, the growth they inspired, and the love they embodied will live on forever.
"Rest in peace, mommy 🕊️ Your light will always be with me, even in my darkest days. Today I say goodbye to you, but I know you're always with me... Thank you all for your messages and respect," said the famous YouTuber and podcast and reality TV star.
Additionally, in a caption on his stories, he added that his mother passed away in Caracas, Venezuela, after arriving from Portugal. Pedro and his parents traveled to the European country in early 2025 so she could continue treatment for what was initially breast cancer that later metastasized.
La Divaza had brought her mother to Mexico from her native Venezuela after finding she lacked the means or services to continue fighting. He was paying for all her treatment, and when the costs of what she needed became too much, he took her to Portugal, where they have citizenship and access to medical services.
Unfortunately, a series of infections took her life.
An inspiring story
All love is inspiring, as is seeing people affected by illness and their families united to overcome the health challenge. However, in the case of La Divaza and her mother, the examples they set after a series of breakups are important.
Pedro has shared several times on his various platforms that his parents rejected him when he came out. These stories are featured on his YouTube channel, his former podcast, and his social media accounts.
She even relived some episodes during her time on the fourth season of "La Casa de los Famosos" on the Telemundo network. However, what dominated her presence on the reality show was her concern for her mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer shortly before her appearance.

However, he devoted himself to caring for her, financing her treatments, and took her first to Mexico and then to Portugal to support her in her fight. While the end result of so much love and effort wasn't what they hoped for, his dedication is exemplary, and we hope he's grieving with the peace of mind of someone who knows he did everything and more for his mother.
