Being an actress is no easy job. Specially when you're also a mother and a wife, and you have to deal with your own life's ups and downs -like your husband's cancer- as well as your characters'. Yet Catherine Zeta-Jones has able to maintain an elegance about it. She's always looking strong, confident, sure of herself, very put together. What many don't believe is the actress actually suffers from Bipolar II disorder.
Bipolar II is a form of mental illness with moods cycling high and low over time. The "up" moods never reach full-on mania, these less intense elevated moods are called "hypomanic episodes" or hypomania. Also, most people with bipolar II disorder also suffer from episodes of depression.
Zeta-Jones revealed her diagnosis about two years ago, after her husband Michael Douglas finally won his battle with cancer and she decided to check into a mental-health facility only to learn that her condition was worse than she expected. Douglas praised her at the time, telling People Magazine that it takes a lot of courage to seek help and he was very proud of her for embracing her situation. "It's onwards and upwards for both of us", he finished the statement.
"This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them," Zeta-Jones then told the same magazine in an exclusive interview after her first rehab stunt. "If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help."
This time around, a spokeswoman for Catherine Zeta-Jones confirmed the treatment is proactive and that she has not had a relapse. She also said that the actress "is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner."
