An 11-year-old boy in Indiana has died after suffering critical burn injuries in a firework incident Sunday night, July 3, authorities said.

At around 9:42 p.m on Sunday, police officers and medics were dispatched to a home at 932 N. Canal Street in Mt. Vernon, after receiving a call regarding a child being seriously injured from a fireworks incident. Indiana State Police said in a statement Monday morning.

The fifth-grader, Camrynn Ray McMichael died while being transported to an Evansville hospital.

"He loved playing football for MTV and basketball. He’s dedicated, never has missed a game, workout, practice, or volunteering," the boy’s mother, Kyrra Lynn, told NBC affiliate WFIE of Evansville.

"Getting ready to go into sixth grade, but most of all he loved his little sister. He loved her more than anything."

"He died being a boy and playing with fireworks. A tragic freak accident, seriously. Fireworks are no joke and when you think it won’t be yours, in the blink of an eye it is," Lynn told FOX59.

The Indiana State Police, Mt. Vernon Police Department, and the Posey County Coroner are investigating the incident.

Neighbor, Maryann Watson said she was shocked by the child’s death as she was about to ask the "nice little boy" for a favor before she left town.

"I had been thinking about talking to Cam to see if he’d be interested in checking the animals for me, and I’m just so sad to hear that, that won’t be happening," says Watson, "it just, he was a nice little boy."

"I don’t know what I’m going to say to his mother when I see her because I can’t imagine what you do say to a mom, you know, when they’ve lost their little one," she said.

The school authorities released a statement expressing their grief in Camrynn’s untimely passing.

"The school district is saddened by the loss of Camrynn. We are finalizing plans to provide grief counseling later this week for students and staff. It is tragic to lose such a young, energetic life, and we hope to support those impacted by his loss," said MSD of Mt. Vernon School Superintendent Dr. Matt Thompson.
