Police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, said a 12-year-old girl is in custody after fatally stabbing her 9-year-old brother.

According to a press release from the Tulsa Police Department, the child is being held in a juvenile detention facility in Tulsa.

Conforming to a statement issued by Tulsa police on Friday, Jan. 6, the stabbing was reported just before midnight on Thursday at a house in the St. Thomas Square neighborhood south of the city's center.

"Officers learned the children’s parent was upstairs asleep when the 12-year-old daughter woke the parent up and said that she had stabbed her nine-year-old brother," the Tulsa Police Department said, FOX 11 reported.

The police were called to a stabbing late on Thursday night. Paramedics and firefighters were on scene and providing CPR to a 9-year-old male victim when police arrived, according to authorities.

"Officers learned the children’s parent was upstairs asleep when the 12-year-old daughter woke the parent up and said that she had stabbed her nine-year-old brother," said the release.

He underwent surgery prior to passing away from his injuries on Saturday, police said.

According to police reports, the girl was taken into custody at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice in Tulsa and remained there at least until Friday. She was being held on unknown charges, and the claimed attack's motivation has not been made public.

"She’s losing two children at one time, her life, or the little girl’s life will never be the same, especially the little girl," a mother of three grown children in a neighboring apartment complex shared her reaction.

Given her young age, the child's name was being withheld, so it wasn't known if she had legal representation. Requests for response from the Tulsa County Public Defenders Juvenile Division were not immediately fulfilled.

She may be detained for five business days in accordance with Oklahoma law while a petition detailing potential accusations is filed.

Children 12 and younger are prohibited from being held, but state law allows exceptions in circumstances of extreme, felony-equivalent allegations when the child may be a harm to the community or themselves.

In accordance with Oklahoma law, a kid must be 13 years old or older to face adult criminal charges for felony murder.

The Tulsa Police Department's Child Crisis Unit was handling the investigation into the case.

Not only this is the second homicide in the city of Tulsa this year, it is the second sibling killing of the new year.

On Jan. 3, 39-year-old Clifton Speed fatally shot and hit older brother Byron multiple times during a family "scuffle," police said. Clifton suffered severe enough facial and head injuries from the collision to necessitate surgery. When Clifton leaves the hospital, he will be charged with his brother's murder.
