A woman in Uttar Pradesh died in the hands of her fiancé Monday after he strangled her to death because he had no intentions of marrying her.

Police found the victim, identified as 19-year-old Meenakshi Singh, lying on the road outside the village of Moradabad's Surajnagar around 2:30 p.m.

According to police reports, Singh, also known to her family and friends as Teena, received a call from her fiancé, identified as Jitin, asking her to meet up with him to buy some sarees for their upcoming wedding scheduled on June 20.

The bride-to-be’s mother dropped her off at the nearby bus stand around 11 a.m. that day after Teena’s father stepped out of the house to distribute invitation cards for the wedding at a neighboring village.

On his way home, the vicitm's unsuspecting father found a group of people standing on the road. When he parked his motorcycle to have a look-see through the crowd, he saw his daughter's lifeless body.

"It's my daughter," Teena’s father said as he fell to the ground.

Meanwhile, Jitin reportedly returned home but said Teena was nowhere to be found. The victim's other family members looked for her but couldn’t trace her. The girl’s family informed authorities, and they eventually told them that her body was found outside the village.

The family identified the body and told police that Jitin had met with her during the day to buy sarees. Police arrested Jitin and subjected him to an interrogation.

During the interrogation, the suspect said that he had made attempts to call off their wedding and even had an argument with Teena over the issue. He was in love with her but did not want to marry her.

The victim’s father said that he fixed his daughter's marriage with Jitin as they knew each other.

On June 6, Teena’s family gave gifts to Jitin and his family members as part of a ceremony. However, his family members were upset as they wanted more money. Jitin had asked his soon-to-be in-laws to postpone the wedding, but this seemed impossible at the time as they had already distributed the cards and booked the venue.

The victim's family insisted the couple’s marriage was not arranged but based on the fact that they were in love with each other. They said the couple was free to get out of the marriage at any time.

Police told Times of India that Jitin could have taken Teena to a secluded spot where he strangled her to death.

The suspect has since been booked for murder.
